Visit Banff - The city with the highest elevation in Canada,
Banff sits at a lofty 1463m above sea level. Lying within the Banff National
Park, the town is famous for world famous, champagne-powder skiing. But by
no means does it mean that the activities dim off the ski-fields.
‘Banff’ is an old Celtic, poetic name for Ireland, and the area is believed
by some to have been named by a Scotsman after the Scottish Royal Burgh of
the same name. And truly majestic it is, both in natural abundance and
man-made endeavours. more |

From its humble beginnings grounded in the
Canadian rail industry, when rail workers staked a claim on the area’s hot
springs, Banff has become a premier ski resort town, with an abundance of
wildlife, and views of one of the few untouched mountainous regions left.
Skiing always comes to mind whenever Banff is mentioned. With some of the
best dry-powder skiing in the world and the three famous ski-fields of
Sunshine, Lake Louise and Mt. Norquay, skiers of all levels flock to the
area in winter for some guaranteed good snow.
A Tri-Area Ski Pass covering the three fields is available and even includes
shuttle transfers between the areas. Between the three fields, over 250
different runs situated on over 7,700 acres, can be found. And with ski
season starting early November and ending in late May, there’s plenty of
time to find that perfect run.
For those wishing to experience a little less strenuous activity, but still
wishes to experience the great ski conditions, should give snow-shoeing a
try. With the help of modern innovations, no experience or special abilities
are needed to take on this sport. And what better way to enjoy the tranquil
national park than breaking track through some freshly fallen snow? With
some luck, you might even bump into some of the four legged locals.
For indoor activities visitors should pay a call to the Banff Park Museum,
one of Canada’s oldest natural history museums. In 1895 Banff received a
shipment of eight mammals, 259 birds, a turtle, 57 specimens of wood, 814
plants and 201 mineral samples, and so the beginnings of the natural history
museum emerged. The collection has only grown since then, and is quite a
good representation of the organisms within the Banff National Park.
The village is a perfect little spot for some local and international
shopping. Access to the village can be gained with a shuttle from most
hotels and motels at a small fee directly into the heart of the village,
where visitors can browse through the many little boutiques offering unique
items of interest.
In terms of culture and the arts in the area, visitors must take a quick
look –or long peruse– at The Banff Centre, an internationally recognised
centre for promoting talent, locally and globally for nearly 75 years. In
summer a hub-bub of activity hits the town when The Banff Summer Arts
Festival co-produced and co-commissioned by the Centre sets up shop. This
festival is a must-see highlight if you’re in the area.
So plan that ski itinerary for Banff, but don’t forget all the other great
features that the area has to offer apart from the legendary ski fields. And
why not take a quick peek in summer as well? With the local wildlife
emerging from winter, and much of the snow disappearing, the area has a
completely different feel from its skiing legacy. |
