(Region of France :
Languedoc-Roussillon) -
Carcassonne possesses two World Patrimony Sites classified by the UNESCO

also two distinct parts, two "cities" : the famous medieval Cité, and the
Lower Town, also called "la Bastide Saint Louis". Average altitude : 110
metres over sea level, situated between the Montagne Noire to the North and
the Corbières and Pyrenees to the South. The
city of Carcassonne is exceptionally well-located in the southwest
between Toulouse and Narbonne and close to another Heritage site, the
Canal du Midi. This network of navigable waterways was built in the 17th
century to link the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.

Carcassonne
- Very close to the historic city of Carcassonne, a world heritage site,
this 18 hole, par 71 course is gently undulating, with technical
challenges to keep the best players interested, but nothing too daunting
for the beginner. The stream that crosses the course, the water
obstacles and carefully sited bunkers add spice to the game. The 9th
hole has been named by several golf magazines as the most original in
Europe. While you’re in the area, try the great wines of the Corbières,
Fitou or Minervois and the culinary specialities of the Cathar region.
Antiques (and their replicas
sold as souvenirs), books and wine are the most popular items among
travelers.
Browse the book stores in the Bastide Saint Louis. There are plenty of
stores (and some scarce bookshops) along George Clemenceau street. There,
you will find rare or sold out editions mainly in French, but isn’t it a
treasure to find an old edition of Madame Bovary or other French classic
novel? Or a beautifully handcrafted notebook? And it is no wonder you’ll
find these gems as the region boasts a long tradition of book binding shops!
Montolieu, also called “the city of books”, is only 8 miles from
Carcassonne.
Antiques? You’ll find the items that were used in different moments of
the history of France from old maps to weapons and clothing in the antique
shops in La Cite. These stores are like museums where you can feel that you
are back in history. Try Antiquites, one of the oldest stores on Porte
c’Aude street. Many stores sell replicas of these objects (swords, shields,
armors) that make excellent souvenirs or great amusement toys for the kids.
You can buy wine from neighboring wineries, at local stores or at the
market that every Saturday opens at Place Carnot in La Bastide. The region’s
specialty is rose wine, being the Chateau Villerambert-Moureau one of the
best regional producers (the Minervois is their most popular kind).
Eating and Drinking Carcassonne
With over
fifty restaurants within its walls, the Cité is a good place to look for
somewhere to eat, though it tends to be on the expensive side. First choice
is the Auberge de Dame Carcas, 3 place du Château (tel 04.68.71.23.23;
closed Sun eve, Mon lunch & Feb), a traditional bistro, offering cassoulet
and other regional dishes. Otherwise try the Jardin de la Tour, 11 rue Porte
d'Aude (closed Sun eve & Nov–Mar), with outside tables, or the smart
Brasserie du Donjon, in the hotel of the same name; both serve terroir
menus. There's a much greater variety of affordable places in the ville
basse: among these Le Petit Couvert, at 18 rue de l'Aigle d'Or, has good
cheap menus (closed Sun & Mon) and a small street-side terrace, while La
Bérbére, 2 rue Denisse, is a friendly Moroccan restaurant and salon du thé
(closed Sun & Mon). Nearby, at 29 bd Jean-Jaurès, the Divine Comédie serves
a varied menu of pasta, pizzas and regional dishes in generous portions
(closed Sun). For something more sophisticated, try Chez Fred, beside Jardin
Chénier at 31 bd Omer Sarraut.
La Barbacane
La Barbacane gastronomic reputation is firmly established. The restaurant is
open from Thursday to Monday and it is located in the heart of the hotel.
The neo-Gothic dining room features magnificent fireplaces, high ceilings
and cathedral chairs.

Bars And Nightlife
Carcassonne at night is simply magical, the walls and monuments are
highlighted with golden lights. On your way to a bar or a discotheque,
walking through this open air museum is something you won’t forget.
Carcassonne is a small city but as one of the top French tourism
destinations, there is a wide range of trendy places to sample. Many people
start the evening with an aperitif after a long day of visiting the medieval
sites, and then go on to some great nightspots. Latino bars and clubs are
very popular!
Carcassonne has been influenced by over
2000 years of conquests, crusades, and the prosperous period of Catharism’s
religion. Before its restoration, the Cité was an abandoned place in an
outlying area in a town made wealthy by the wine trade and the clothes
manufacturing industry.
Today Carcassonne offers a unique historical and architectural asset. In the
absence of any heavy industry tourism is undoubtedly the city’s strength
both because of its geographic position and its exceptional heritage. The
medieval walled town, the “Cité”, lies on the right bank of river Aude, and
is still home to its population of around 120, with a large number of shops
and craftsmen.
On the left bank, the modern city Bastide Saint Louis has kept its
historical roots. You will be amazed by its outstanding variety of
architectural styles, including buildings dating from the 14th to the 18th
century such as the Saint Michel Cathedral. The mix of modernity and
historical wealth offers a very rich cultural life.
Within a unique scenery and authenticity, the city has managed to provide
all amenities for both tourists and business travellers. If you have time,
the whole region has much more to show, like going on a “péniche” or barge
on Canal du Midi or explore the huge vineyards’ hectares.
