Visit Cologne
Cologne is a metropolis (1.4 million
inhabitants) known especially as a trade fair centre. Moreover, Cologne is
an important centre of art and culture. This reputation hinges on its
excellent museums, numerous historic buildings and superb art galleries.
Founded by the Romans and largely destroyed in the Second World War, Cologne
offers a seducing mix of old, rebuilt and new architecture. The impressive
cathedral is one of the archetypal monuments of Germany. The highest number
of visitors, however, come to Cologne for the five days preceding Ash
Wednesday, to join in the fun and watch the grand carnival processions.
Despite its metropolitan atmosphere, visitors to Cologne will also find
romantic corners with taverns, pubs and inns, in which they can enjoy the
famous "Kölsch" beer.

| Cologne Weather & Climate
The climate of northwestern Germany is changeable, with seasonal changes and
day-to-day weather often comparable to that of the UK or Northern France.
Cologne is 50m above sea level, which is partly responsible for the city’s mild
climate, with average temperatures ranging from -1°C in winter to 24°C in the
summer.
Summer
Cologne summers are more slightly wet and humid with a cool breeze, rather than
blazingly hot. Despite the threat of rain, July and August are delightful months
to visit Cologne in terms of temperature. June and August have the most
precipitation, and July is the hottest month of the year.
Winter
Cologne has moderate, mild winters, with February being the coldest time of the
year. It seldom snows during a Cologne winter, but keep in mind that in the dead
of winter, there are only six to eight hours of daylight, with the sun setting
in mid-afternoon in December.
Spring and autumn
The nicest weather is in spring, from March to May - and autumn, from September
to October. May and September are the most pleasant months, when outdoor cafes
and beer gardens are open and busy. Rain is always a possibility, but not
constant enough to thwart your pleasure. May to March and October to early
November also have plenty of mild and nice days. |
