Visit Luxembourg - a city in the countryside.
More than a stronghold of high finance, the capital of the Duchy of Luxembourg is a peaceful little provincial city set in the countryside.
Indeed, Luxembourg's charm stems from its gardens, parks, military ruins and amazing topography. Built on a rocky plateau punctuated by ravines and bridges, the city boasts an irresistible natural setting. At the bottom of the valley, to the north and south, lazily wind two fairytale rivers, the Pétrusse and the Alzette.
Also striking is the predominance of military architecture: for centuries in Luxembourg, ramparts and military buildings were erected to hold at bay - with varying degrees of success - the Spanish, French, Austrians and Prussians. Indeed, in 1867, when the Prussians departed, fortifications outnumbered civilian buildings!
The romantic character of the place was not lost on Victor Hugo, who sketched it in ink during his exile. There is, in fact, nothing natural about its picturesque quality: in the late 19th century, Luxembourg called on a French landscape architect, Édouard André, to "demilitarise" the city by creating parks and gardens. He certainly pulled it off: all the Luxembourgers or foreigners in exile that you meet here are full of praise for their environment. A city in the country is something you can't put a price on! Actually you can - in the city centre the rents are on a par with those in Paris. But otherwise, thanks to its low VAT, the prices (particularly in restaurants) are not at all excessive.

Shopping Luxembourg

Luxembourg also has an interesting shopping district. "Fashion victims" will find everything they could possibly want here. Whether clothes, bags or shoes, well-known designers are represented here. Luxembourgers are confident in the belief that quality has its price, and they are just as proud of the many culinary specialities their country has to offer.
For short breaks in between shopping, there are a large number of cafes and bistros where you can linger and refuel your energy for your next shopping spree.

However, when out shopping you have to get used to the shop opening hours here: the shops are open on Mondays from 2 to 6 p.m. and the rest of the week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Always good fun is a stroll round the flea market, which is held every second and fourth Saturday of the month on the Place d’Armes. Here amongst all sorts of rummage you can occasionally find something original.

Eating and Drinking  Luxembourg

The city of Luxembourg certainly has some fine fare to offer! An amazing culinary diversity thrives here, which can be explained by the tumultuous history of this border country, occupied in turn by most of the peoples of Europe. Added to these "historical" influences are the great waves of Italian and Portuguese immigration, which took place after the Second World War.

Sports & Activities Luxembourg

Golf: There are six golf clubs in the country. There are five 18-hole courses: Golf Club Grand Ducal (located in Senningerbierg, close to Luxembourg-Ville); Golf de Clervaux (located just outside the town of Clervaux, north of the capital, offering good views and golf cars for rent); Kikuoka Country Club Chant Val (located at Scheierhaff near the town of Canach); Golf & Country Club Christnach; and the Golf de Luxembourg (located in Junglinster). A 9-hole course is available at the Golf Club Eischen. For all courses, players must be members of an official golf club.

Luxembourg Weather & Climate

The best time to visit is from mid May to mid October -- that's when it's warmest. Winters aren't too cold, but a sweater is almost always needed at night, even in summer. Another year-round necessity is an umbrella, because the climate tends to be damp.
