Visit Montpellier

Montpellier is the capital of the Hérault department as well as the
Languedoc-Roussillon region.
Although not terribly large, it is a vibrant
city thanks to its student population. It is also home to a thriving gay
community. The old city is lovely, bursting with history from Roman times on
up, and where the action is: for shopping, pubs and people watching. Plus
it's largely a pedestrian zone. Today it vies with Toulouse for the title of
most dynamic city in the south. The reputation of its university especially,
founded in the thirteenth century and most famous for its medical school, is
a long-standing one: more than 60,000 students still set the intellectual
and cultural tone of the city – the average age of whose residents is said
to be just 25.

Musée Fabre - At the eastern edge of Montpellier Old Town, diametrically
opposite the Promenade du Peyrou, lies its simpler counterpart, the Esplanade
Charles de Gaulle. On the west side (Rue Montpellieret) stands the Musée Fabre,
which includes a picture gallery with works by old Italian and Dutch painters,
as well as older and more modern French masters and fine 18th C. sculptures.
Arc de Triomphe - Erected in 1691, this monument is one of several built
to glorify the monarchy. The carved medallions, dating from 1773, celebrate the
achievements of king Louis XIV of France. A small door under the vaulted archway
provides access to the interior of the monument and a staircase winds up to the
rooftop terrace for a magnificent view of the city. Contact the Office du
Tourisme for information on opening times. Free visits are organised on Journees
du Patrimoine (heritage days) in September.
Parc zoologique du Lunaret - 50, avenue d'Agropolis. This zoo covers
80 hectares and contains over 100 different indigenous and exotic species. The
spacious enclosures and vegetation allow the animals some privacy. A little
patience is amply rewarded by the possibility of seeing zebra, antelope, camels
and even cheetah in a habitat of woodland and scrub. With 9km of paths to
explore and several picnic sites, the zoo allows a relaxing yet active and
educational visit. Admission is free. |
