Perpignan Castle. Click to enlarge in a new windowVisit Perpignan Detailed interactive location map
(Region of France : Languedoc-Roussillon) -  Perpignan is the capital of the Pyrenees-Orientales department of the south of France. Only 40km from the Spanish border and 13km from the Mediteranean sea. Perpignan is a farm trade center, handling wine, fruits, and vegetables. It has distilleries, canneries, and factories making chocolate, clothing, paper, and toys. Tourism is also important; there is a nearby international airport with regular flights from the UK to Perpignan, and the city is a thoroughfare for motorists going to Spain.
Founded in the 10th century, Perpignan was the fortified capital of the Spanish kingdom of Roussillon . Its architecture shows much Spanish influence. Among its notable buildings are the Loge (14th cent.), built to house the merchants' exchange; the Gothic Cathedral of St. Jean (14th-15th cent.); and the castle of the kings of Majorca (13th-15th cent.), which forms part of the old citadel dominating the city.

Shopping Perpignan

You can do some very good shopping in Perpignan if you know where to go. As with most tourist areas, there are plenty of smaller shops that sell smaller trinkets and souvenirs. Things like t-shirts, shot glasses, key chains, and postcards can be found for low costs. However, if you want to spend a bit more or get something more memorable, you will be able to do so as well. There are plenty of antique and rare goods shops located throughout the city. You will often have to spend a good amount of money in these shops, but every now and then you can find a real hidden treasure. Art is also something that you can pick up in Perpignan. There are plenty of clothing stores as well. If you are looking for the latest French fashions, you will be able to find them in the city. There are other types of clothing stores as well, some of which are more specific to the area in which Perpignan is located. You will find that many of the influences in the area come from the Spanish, which makes the taste a bit different from that in Paris.

Eating and Drinking  Perpignan

Nightlife

Perpignan is permeated by Spanish and Catalan influences and this becomes evident at night. The streets around place de la Loge has the highest concentration of bars and clubs in town. A typical evening in town usually start with some drinks in the bars de nuit and then off to the disco for a night of dancing. A good place to start your pub crawl is at Le Habana-Club, 5 rue Grande-des-Fabriques where you will enjoy wonderful cocktails while listening to salsa and merengua music. The discos in Perpignan generally open around 11 pm. Try Le Napoli, 3 rue place de Catalonia, a modern, mirrored space without any chairs. Dancing is the name of the game. Another option is Uba-Club, 5 bd. Mercader, with modern decor and some sofas and chairs and a smallish dance floor. Le Milord, 20 rue Jules-Verne, one of the largest discos in town is where the social locals between the ages 30 to 50 hang out.

La Villa Duflot

109 ave. Victor Dalbiez, Perpignan. This restaurant with rooms is the most tranquil oasis in the area. The owner, André Duflot, employs excellent chefs who concoct amazing dishes with skill and professionalism. The salad of warm squid or a platter of fresh anchovies marinated in vinegar are recommended for a starter or a light lunch.
The foie gras of duckling is not to be missed. Try one of the two new specialties, gratin of lobster and a succulent fillet of duckling with figs. The sensational fresh peaches in Banyuls wine is the perfect desert to finish a magnificent meal. There is also an American bar on the premises. Open daily from noon to 2.30 pm and again from 8 am to 11 am.

Weather in Perpignan

Perpignan is one of the sunniest places in France. Summers in Perpignan are delightfully warm, with average temperatures peaking in the low 30’s (°C) in July and August, yet remaining above 12°C, even during winter, despite the altitude, making a Perpignan ideal for exploring both the treasures of the town and the stunning countryside which surrounds the town.

Villages & resorts in the Perpignan Area:

Argelès-sur-Mer - comprises Argeles Ville, with a good range of shops and supermarkets and the more modern and bustling resort of Argeles Plage, with its long sandy beaches. There is a new marina to the south of the beach area, en route to the more intimate resort of Le Racou which has a fine sand beach with beach front hotels and restaurants.

Banyuls-sur-Mer - Nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees, Banyuls-sur-Mer is a quaint village in the south of France. Within driving distance of fantastic sights, we recommend this beautiful seaside resort.

Canet, situated on its excellent blue flag beach. Canet is known for its water sports facilities and picturesque lagoons, which teem with bird life.

Collioure - (Hotels Collioure) a lovely beach town some fifteen kilometers south of Perpignan, close to the Spanish border with France.

Saint Cyprien - The middle of the town is the oldest part, the original 1950s district. It consists of old hotels and apartments that are a bit faded in a charming sort of way. Here you can find nice restaurants as well.

Saint Cyprien Plage is a nice town built on the purpose of tourism, but it is not in your face like some places frequented by visitors on holiday. It focuses on families relaxing, and has developed a charm despite the reason for its construction. Relaxing can be hectic, but in Saint Cyprien you at least get a chance to take it easy.
