Head for rue d'Alsace-Lorraine,
which is rich in clothing and housewares. At the well-stocked shopping mall,
the Centre Commercial St-Georges, rue du Rempart St-Etienne, you can fill
your suitcases with all kinds of glittery loot. For upscale boutiques, head
to rue Croix-Baragnon, rue des Arts, and rue St-Antoine du T. The pearly
gates of antiques heaven are on rue Fermat. More down-market antiques spread
out each Sunday from 8am to noon during the weekly flea market adjacent to
the Basilique St-Sernin. In addition to that, in the same spot, a brocante
(knickknack) sale takes place on the first weekend (Fri-Sun) of each month
from 8am to 1pm.
Violets grow in abundance in meadows on the outskirts of Toulouse. Two
shops that sell everything imaginable connected with violets include
Violettes & Pastels, 10 rue St-Pantaléon (tel. 05-61-22-14-22), and Péniche
Maison de la Violette, Canal du Midi, just in front of the rail station
(tel. 05-61-90-01-30). Inventories include violet-scented perfume, and
clothing -- especially scarves -- patterned with the dainty purple flower.

Les Jardins
de l'Opéra - 1 PLACE DU CAPITOLE
The elegant dining rooms under a glass roof and separated by a fountain
dedicated to Neptune. Unusually, the menu offers dishes in "trilogy": three
dishes on the same plate. Brasserie de l'Opéra - 1 place du Capitole
Chic 1930s style brasserie where you meet everyone in Toulouse, along with
stars who leave their photo to mark a visit. Typical, seasonally influenced
brasserie cuisine. La Corde - 4 RUE CHALANDE
This impressive 15C tower, all that remains of a mansion that used to belong
to prominent families of Toulouse, is home to the city's oldest restaurant
(1881). Updated regional dishes. Brasserie Flo "Les Beaux Arts" - 1 quai de la Daurade
This brasserie at the Garonne's edge was once frequented by Ingres, Matisse
and Bourdelle, and is appreciated by the locals. Retro decor. Highly varied
menu.
The climate in Toulouse is temperate: like the climate throughout Southern France, it is very pleasant. Winters are mild, summers are long and hot, the autumns are sunny.
